Uganda: registering a trademark costs an estimated US$935 for one class, plus US$865 for each further class. Uganda is not a member of the Madrid System, so a trademark must be filed directly with its office. It can also be protected through an ARIPO application that designates Uganda. Uganda is a leading import market for agricultural products (class 31) and chemicals (class 1).
Trademark protection in Uganda can also be obtained through ARIPO: one ARIPO application that designates Uganda and other member states. The filing figures on this page count only applications filed directly with Uganda's own office.
Figures by trademark class count branded goods only: raw commodities that are traded mostly without brands - such as gold bars, fuel, bulk chemicals, grain and fabric by the metre - are left out. Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates are left out of the rankings, as much of their trade is re-exported.
Our estimate is about US$935 for one class, from filing to registration: about US$565 in official fees and about US$370 in professional (law firm) fees. Each further class costs about as much again (US$865). Responses to office actions and oppositions are not included. These are estimates only: the actual cost depends on the law firm and the application. Request a quote from a law firm on this site for an exact price.

Uganda's 10 largest import markets by trademark class are machines (class 7, US$1.0bn), vehicles (class 12, US$817m), electronics and software (class 9, US$762m), pharmaceuticals (class 5, US$345m), cosmetics and cleaning (class 3, US$236m), agricultural products (class 31, US$153m), clothing, footwear and headwear (class 25, US$142m), coffee, tea, bakery and confectionery (class 30, US$106m), chemicals (class 1, US$104m) and paper and printed matter (class 16, US$103m). Within its region, it stands out for agricultural products (#2 in Sub-Saharan Africa), chemicals (#6 in Sub-Saharan Africa), cosmetics and cleaning (#7 in Sub-Saharan Africa), pharmaceuticals (#9 in Sub-Saharan Africa) and medical apparatus (#10 in Sub-Saharan Africa). Imports are growing fastest for paper and printed matter (24% a year), machines (22% a year) and rubber and plastics (20% a year). Foreign applicants filed 1,509 trademark classes in Uganda in 2024 - #11 in Sub-Saharan Africa - a sign of how many brand owners already protect their marks there.
Uganda's exports of goods came to US$8.9bn in 2024. Its 5 largest exports were gold (US$4.2bn, 47% of its exports, #24 in the world), coffee (US$1.5bn, 17% of its exports, #8 in the world), cocoa beans (US$334m, 4% of its exports, #12 in the world), sugar (US$162m, 2% of its exports, #34 in the world) and refined petroleum products (US$140m, 2% of its exports, #95 in the world). By trademark class, its 6 largest exports were building materials (class 19, US$172m, #56 in the world), vehicles (class 12, US$114m, #68 in the world), agricultural products (class 31, US$79m, #61 in the world), cosmetics and cleaning (class 3, US$70m, #81 in the world), machines (class 7, US$68m, #95 in the world) and tobacco and smokers' articles (class 34, US$53m, #56 in the world). Where goods are made and exported, copies are often made too: a registered trademark there lets you act against counterfeits at the source, including with the help of customs.
