Mozambique: registering a trademark costs an estimated US$565 for one class, plus US$450 for each further class. Mozambique is a member of the Madrid System, so a trademark can be filed with its office directly or extended to Mozambique through an international registration. It can also be protected through an ARIPO application that designates Mozambique. Mozambique is a leading import market for paper and printed matter (class 16) and hand tools (class 8).
Trademark protection in Mozambique can also be obtained through ARIPO: one ARIPO application that designates Mozambique and other member states. The filing figures on this page count only applications filed directly with Mozambique's own office.
Figures by trademark class count branded goods only: raw commodities that are traded mostly without brands - such as gold bars, fuel, bulk chemicals, grain and fabric by the metre - are left out. Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates are left out of the rankings, as much of their trade is re-exported.
Our estimate is about US$565 for one class, from filing to registration: about US$115 in official fees and about US$450 in professional (law firm) fees. Each further class adds about US$450. Responses to office actions and oppositions are not included. These are estimates only: the actual cost depends on the law firm and the application. Mozambique is a member of the Madrid System, so a trademark can be filed with its office directly or extended to Mozambique through an international registration. Designating Mozambique costs WIPO's standard complementary fee of CHF 100 (about US$120); beyond three classes WIPO also charges a supplementary fee per class, on top of its basic fee for the international application. It can also be protected through an ARIPO application that designates Mozambique.

Within its region, it stands out for paper and printed matter (#5 in Sub-Saharan Africa), hand tools (#5 in Sub-Saharan Africa), household utensils (#7 in Sub-Saharan Africa), cosmetics and cleaning (#8 in Sub-Saharan Africa), chemicals (#9 in Sub-Saharan Africa) and agricultural products (#9 in Sub-Saharan Africa). Imports are growing fastest for agricultural products (52% a year), paper and printed matter (17% a year) and machines (16% a year). Foreign applicants filed 2,633 trademark classes in Mozambique in 2024 - #7 in Sub-Saharan Africa - a sign of how many brand owners already protect their marks there.
Mozambique's exports of goods came to US$13.5bn in 2024. Its 10 largest exports were natural gas and LPG (US$3.4bn, 25% of its exports, #22 in the world), coal (US$3.0bn, 23% of its exports, #9 in the world), aluminium (US$1.9bn, 14% of its exports, #11 in the world), electricity (US$617m, 5% of its exports, #27 in the world), gold (US$397m, 3% of its exports, #62 in the world), titanium ores and concentrates (US$380m, 3% of its exports, #3 in the world), dried pulses (US$378m, 3% of its exports, #12 in the world), precious and semi-precious stones (US$360m, 3% of its exports, #6 in the world), oil seeds (US$270m, 2% of its exports, #9 in the world) and coke (US$257m, 2% of its exports, #10 in the world). Where goods are made and exported, copies are often made too: a registered trademark there lets you act against counterfeits at the source, including with the help of customs.
