Azerbaijan: registering a trademark costs an estimated US$962 for one class, plus US$136 for each further class. Azerbaijan is a member of the Madrid System, so a trademark can be filed with its office directly or extended to Azerbaijan through an international registration. Azerbaijan is a leading import market for jewellery and watches (class 14) and cosmetics and cleaning (class 3).
Figures by trademark class count branded goods only: raw commodities that are traded mostly without brands - such as gold bars, fuel, bulk chemicals, grain and fabric by the metre - are left out. Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates are left out of the rankings, as much of their trade is re-exported.
Goods where Azerbaijan is among the world's 3 largest exporters, has at least 15% of world exports, or that make up at least 25% of its own exports - of at least US$500m a year.
Our estimate is about US$962 for one class, from filing to registration: about US$182 in official fees and about US$780 in professional (law firm) fees. Each further class adds about US$136. Responses to office actions and oppositions are not included. These are estimates only: the actual cost depends on the law firm and the application. Azerbaijan is a member of the Madrid System, so a trademark can be filed with its office directly or extended to Azerbaijan through an international registration. Designating Azerbaijan costs WIPO's standard complementary fee of CHF 100 (about US$120); beyond three classes WIPO also charges a supplementary fee per class, on top of its basic fee for the international application.
Azerbaijan's 10 largest import markets by trademark class are electronics and software (class 9, US$2.3bn), vehicles (class 12, US$2.2bn), machines (class 7, US$1.9bn), clothing, footwear and headwear (class 25, US$731m), pharmaceuticals (class 5, US$473m), cosmetics and cleaning (class 3, US$449m), lighting, heating and cooking appliances (class 11, US$400m), meat, dairy and preserved foods (class 29, US$368m), coffee, tea, bakery and confectionery (class 30, US$349m) and building materials (class 19, US$313m). Imports are growing fastest for leather goods and bags (51% a year), clothing, footwear and headwear (41% a year) and electronics and software (30% a year). Foreign applicants filed 8,313 trademark classes in Azerbaijan in 2024 - #13 in Europe and Central Asia - a sign of how many brand owners already protect their marks there.
Azerbaijan's exports of goods came to US$27.1bn in 2024. Its 10 largest exports were crude oil (US$13.3bn, 49% of its exports, #21 in the world), natural gas and LPG (US$8.1bn, 30% of its exports, #15 in the world), refined petroleum products (US$1.8bn, 7% of its exports, #49 in the world), military weapons (US$322m, 1% of its exports, #4 in the world), gold (US$214m, 1% of its exports, #71 in the world), raw cotton (US$180m, 1% of its exports, #11 in the world), fresh fruit (US$176m, 1% of its exports, #24 in the world), tomatoes (US$176m, 1% of its exports, #11 in the world), cars (US$172m, 1% of its exports, #48 in the world) and nitrogen fertilisers (US$160m, 1% of its exports, #37 in the world). By trademark class, its 4 largest exports were vehicles (class 12, US$190m, #66 in the world), meat, dairy and preserved foods (class 29, US$123m, #85 in the world), machines (class 7, US$80m, #90 in the world) and electronics and software (class 9, US$53m, #103 in the world). Where goods are made and exported, copies are often made too: a registered trademark there lets you act against counterfeits at the source, including with the help of customs.
